After you have mastered the foundations you will start with the more technical skills specific to barbering or hairdressing.

 

Technical Skills

 

If you want to know how to become a successful barber, this is one of the keys. The development of your technical skills is essential. If you are training to be a barber you will develop technique is specific areas

  • Cutting and Clipping
  • Creating tracks and carving
  • Maintaining beards and moustaches
  • Shaving heads and faces

As a hairdresser, you will develop technique in

  • Braiding hair
  • Colour and lightening hair
  • Highlighting
  • Bleaching
  • Straightening with chemical treatments
  • Upstyling

 

To really master the practical technique, you will need to make sure you have the theoretical knowledge behind you to support what you are doing.

 

Theoretical Knowledge

 

Grasping the theoretical knowledge behind what you are doing is especially important for the care of your clientYou will be required to understand different hair types and how they respond to cutting, styling and chemical treatments. This also includes understanding hair and scalp conditions, why they occur and how to treat them. You will also need to know what conditions you can’t treat and may have to refuse service for. Not only do you need knowledge for practical skills, but you will also need to learn about providing services to your clients.

 

Client Management

 

Your clients are the one thing that will keep you in a job or in business. Understanding how to manage clients and provide the best service possible is another essential key to becoming a successful barber or hairdresser. You will need to manage money, understand how to retail stock and be able to produce a great looking visual merchandise display. Being great at selling products is a skill that all barbers and hairdressers need.

Completing a Certificate III in barbering or hairdressing will teach you all of this. It is the best entry-level course to get you started in a career as a barber or hairdresser.
